Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs)

Independent engineering for the energy behind your data center or power plant

Behind every gigawatt of behind-the-meter power sits an HRSG — and the difference between a well-engineered unit and a marginal one is measured in MW of lost steam, percentage points of heat rate, and years of unplanned outages. FIS provides independent, OEM-agnostic HRSG engineering services to EPCs, IPPs, hyperscaler energy teams, and refining clients building or operating combined-cycle and CHP plants.

We have spent thirty years designing, auditing, and revamping fired heat-transfer equipment for some of the most demanding environments in the world — refining, petrochemicals, hydrogen, and power. The same first-principles thermal, mechanical, and combustion engineering that delivers efficiency in a platformer heater or SMR delivers it in an HRSG.

What we do

HRSG Design review and revamp

Independent design verification of new HRSGs from any OEM, or scope of revamp work for existing units. Includes evaluation of single-pressure vs multi-pressure configurations, supplementary firing, OTSG vs drum-type selection, and stack and damper systems.

Waste heat recovery integration

Studies that thread turbine and engine waste heat through HRSGs, absorption chillers, district heat loops, and process steam users — and identify the most economic configuration for the site.

HRSG performance audit

Field walk-down, baseline thermal model, identification of efficiency losses, fouling, draft anomalies, tube-pass imbalance, and steam-side bottlenecks. Deliverable: prioritized findings with quantified upside and ±30% capex for remediation.

Duct burner engineering

Sizing, integration, NOx and CO performance, refractory and casing review, and combustion staging. Our patented Inclined Firing Technology and Smart Stack Damper concepts apply directly to supplementary-fired HRSGs.

Why an independent engineering partner?

OEM HRSG vendors will design exactly what they sell. EPCs will integrate exactly what their preferred vendor list dictates. Both are necessary, and neither is structured to challenge the spec.

An independent firm with deep fired heat-transfer credentials catches the items that go wrong between disciplines — the duct burner sizing that doesn't match the steam load, the supplementary firing case that wasn't run, the multi-pressure configuration that costs $4M more than a single-pressure unit would have for the same site. Our work is paid for by the cost we take out, not by the equipment we sell.
